Piano Tuning

Definition:

tun·ing

/ˈto͞oniNG/

The action or process of tuning something.

Defined as the process of making slight adjustments to the tension of all the strings inside of a piano in order to properly align the intervals to make them sound "in tune." In Oklahoma, higher levels of humidity in the summer and dry winters with very little humidity will significantly alter your piano's tuning.

Because the strings of a piano are connected to a wooden soundboard via wooden bridges, the pitch of a piano will drift sharp when exposed to an increase in humidity due to an increase in the soundboard's moisture content. As the soundboard of a piano loses this moisture in dryer winter months, the pitch will fall flat. Both of these changes in the soundboard's moisture content will cause the piano to go out of tune. At the very least, pianos in Oklahoma need to be tuned twice per year in order to accommodate for these changes in climatic conditions.

Pitch Raising

Definition:

pitch1

/piCH/

The quality of a sound governed by the rate of vibrations producing it.

A service performed before tuning if the overall pitch of the piano is more than 10% flat (or sharp) from standard pitch (A-440). If your piano has gone more than one year without being tuned, it is likely that a pitch raise/correction will need to be done first in order to allow for a stable, fine tuning.

Also known as a "double tuning," a pitch raise requires two full passes through the entire piano instead of one. The first pass, which is, the initial pitch raise, is a quick, rough tuning that is done to pull the strings up to the correct tension so they can be properly tuned in the second pass. To keep your piano at the correct pitch and prevent a major pitch deviation, it is important to tune your instrument every six months.

Definition:

Action Regulation

Definition:

reg·u·la·tion

/ˌreɡ(y)əˈlāSH(ə)n/

The action or process of regulating.

A series of precise, mechanical adjustments done to the action of a piano to create an even "touch" across the entire keyboard. If your piano has keys that stick or return slowly, regulation work done to the action will bring your piano to a higher level of function and allow for overall better control, responsiveness and repetition.

Since a piano is made out of wood, felt and other organic materials, it is common for normal wear to take place as a piano is played over the years along with being affected by changes in humidity over time.

Voicing

Definition:

voice

/vois/

To regulate the tone quality of (organ pipes or a piano).

The process of altering of a piano's tonal characteristics by softening or hardening the hammers, which strike the strings. If your piano sounds too bright or percussive or, too mellow or soft, voicing can help make your piano sound more to your personal liking.
